Yay, it’s tax season again! And that means the good folks at the post office are now whisking organizers to our tax client’s doors. So, here are three easy tips for folks getting their tax documents together:
- Make sure you have all your documents: Did you open or close accounts this year? Did you start or close a business? Did you buy or sell a house or investment? Did you have a debt cancelled or forgiven? Most of these transactions will spin off paperwork that will be used for tax purposes either this year or in the future. If you’re not sure (and you’re one of our clients), give us a call and we’ll help you out.
- Don’t forget your charitable deductions: If you made non-cash charitable contributions this year (such as donating clothes to a thrift store), don’t forget to include your receipts and a list of the donated items with your organizer. We’ll do that calculations (again, if you’re a client), you save the big bucks.
- Receive your refund intelligently: If you’re one of our clients, then you will probably elect to receive your refund directly from the IRS via direct deposit. If you’re not one of our clients, and you elect to have your taxes prepared by a tax preparer, make sure you’re making a wise decision on how you expect to receive your refund. You will want to have you plan in place before you have your taxes prepared.
